Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Children Partnership

I have nowhere to live

I have nowhere to live

What does ‘homeless’ actually mean?

Being homeless doesn’t just mean living on the streets.  You can be homeless even if you have somewhere to stay.

You might be considered homeless if you are:

  • Sleeping on the streets
  • Staying with friend’s or ‘sofa surfing’
  • Staying in a B&B
  • Squatting in a building
  • Living somewhere unsafe because you are being hurt, abused or threatened

Sometimes young people are tricked, forced or persuaded to leave their homes and are moved somewhere else and exploited.  This is called child trafficking and it is illegal.

Who can help me?

Workers from social care and housing have a legal duty to help young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  They will work together with you to:

  • Try to make things better at home, or
  • Find you somewhere safe to live

If you might become homeless, get help straight away

You can talk to:

  • Someone at school or college
  • Tell your social worker or youth worker (if you have one) or call children’s social care
